FASHION PATTERN DRAFTING 101




Are you aspiring to be a fashion designer? 
Have you learnt fashion designing from the roadside seamstress and you need knowledge of detailed pattern drafting? 

I will be introducing us to the world of fashion design through pattern drafting. i will like to start this series with introduction to pattern drafting. 

INTRODUCTION TO PATTERN DRAFTING 

I like to define Fashion Pattern Drafting as simply a way of drawing a particular outfit design on paper following the body measurements to precision. It has its pros and cons but overall it is a very effective method of designing outfits especially for beginners. 

I will list few advantages below: 


  1.  A good drafted pattern enable good fit to suit the individual body requirements
  2. You can always refer to the drafted pattern paper for your customer at any other time you need to make another outfit 
  3. It is easy to manipulate to derive other styles and designs 
  4. It saves wastage of fabrics 


Tools needed for pattern drafting: 


  1. Pattern papers (brown papers)
  2. ruler
  3. pencil
  4. french curves or hip curve ruler
  5. tape measure
  6. pins and paper tapes (optional)
Types of patterns: 

Various garments can be designed from understanding the following listed basic bodice. it is essential that every beginner in fashion design have a detailed knowledge of these patterns and that's all it takes. 

  1. Basic Skirt Bodice
  2. Basic Blouse Bodice
  3. Hip Sloper Blouse
  4. Basic Gown Bodice
  5. Basic Sleeves
